Post-Operative Care After a Facelift: Supporting Your Results

Undergoing a facelift is a significant investment in your appearance and confidence. Just like wearing a supportive bra after breast surgery helps maintain optimal results, caring for your face after a facelift requires specific steps to ensure long-lasting outcomes.

This blog focuses on the importance of post-operative treatments and how they play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing your facelift results.

Why Post-Operative Care Matters

A facelift addresses sagging skin, wrinkles, and other signs of aging by repositioning tissues and tightening the skin. However, the healing process doesn’t end when you leave the operating room. Proper post-op care ensures:

  • Optimal Healing: Supporting internal function as your face heals minimizes complications like swelling and ensures tissues settle properly.
  • Longevity of Results: Preventing unnecessary strain or damage helps maintain your facelift’s effects over time.
  • Enhanced Comfort: The right care reduces discomfort and accelerates your recovery.

Just as weight loss surgery patients rely on garments for support, facelift patients must also follow the same principle to support the face and skin post operatively. To increase longevity of your result the procedure does not end on the operating table.

Key Post-Operative Treatments for Facelift Patients

  1. Hilotherm Usage for 72 hours: On leaving the hospital you will be taking a fairly large contraption home with you! This machine is designed to help aid recovery by using temperature-controlled therapy. This reduces pain, swelling and bruising following surgery or treatment. You then return the device to our nurse at your 2-3 day post op appt.  https://www.hilotherm.co.uk/post-op
  2. Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Gentle lymphatic drainage massage can reduce swelling, improve circulation, and encourage healing. Performed by trained professionals, this treatment is a soothing way to enhance recovery. (Only once Dr Anthony MacQuillan has approved you are able to have this at your post op appts).
  3. Skin Hydration and Protection: Hydrating and protecting your skin with approved moisturizers and sunscreen is critical after a facelift. Keeping the skin supple and shielded from UV rays promotes faster healing and preserves results. SPF 50 is required for all patients post operatively for 12 months minimum. A good way to incorporate this is to find an everyday moisturiser that has this within its potion!
  4. Scar Care: Minimizing the appearance of scars involves using silicone gels, creams, or patches. These treatments help improve the texture and appearance of incision sites, ensuring a smooth and natural look. No creams are to be put onto the scars until Dr MacQuillan advises you too however incorporating creams and massaging these into your scars will help with the healing period.
  5. Avoiding Strain: Activities that put strain on your facial muscles, like heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or excessive chewing, should be avoided during the initial recovery period. This precaution is akin to limiting movement to protect healing breast tissue.
  6. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular check-ins with your surgeon allow them to monitor your progress, address any concerns, and recommend additional treatments like laser therapy or microneedling to refine your results further. Dr MacQuillan and the team will see you at 72 hours post op, 1 week, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months for your first yearly appointments. (After this we then like to see you every 12m).

The Long-Term Benefits of Facial Maintenance

A facelift provides a foundation for a rejuvenated appearance, but maintaining your results often requires ongoing care. Consider incorporating:

  • Non-Invasive Treatments: Botox and fillers can complement your facelift by addressing dynamic wrinkles or adding subtle volume.
  • CO2 treatments: A Facelift addresses the underlying features of the face, pulling the muscle and the skin. What is does not treat is the skin texture itself. Co2 treatments such as laser resurfacing will aid with this (fully ablative is a lot more invasive)
  • Professional Skincare Regimens: Working with your surgeon or aesthetician to develop a personalized skincare routine ensures your skin remains radiant and youthful.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking contribute to overall skin health and longevity.
