Facelift by Anthony MacQuillan Plastic Surgeon
Deep Plane Facelift is one of the latest advancements in facial aesthetic procedures. This method is becoming increasingly popular among individuals seeking facial rejuvenation, as it offers a distinct approach to address signs of ageing.
Unlike Traditional Facelift techniques that primarily focus on the superficial layers of the face, the Deep Plane Facelift delves deeper, targeting the foundational layers of facial structure. This approach allows for more comprehensive and lasting results, making it a sought-after choice for those looking to revive their facial appearance.
At its core, the Deep Plane Facelift is about enhancing your facial contours in a way that is both subtle and profound. By repositioning deeper tissues and muscles, it aims to provide a more natural and refreshed look, steering clear of the ‘pulled’ appearance often associated with older methods.
Consultant Plastic Surgeon Anthony MacQuillan performs Deep Plane Facelift surgery in Bath, Bristol and London. Learn more about its benefits, and key considerations to help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.
What is a Deep Plane Facelift?
A Deep Plane Facelift goes beyond the superficial adjustments of a standard Facelift, offering a more comprehensive approach to facial ageing. It’s all about enhancing your facial contours in a subtle and profound way. Plastic Surgeon Anthony MacQuillan offers a range of facial rejuvenation procedures including the Deep Plane Facelift.
To understand the essence of this popular procedure, it’s crucial to understand the anatomy of facial ageing. Over time, our skin loses elasticity, and the underlying muscles and fat pads descend, leading to sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and a tired appearance. The Deep Plane Facelift addresses these issues at their root.
During a Deep Plane Facelift, Anthony works on the deep layers of the face. The Deep Plane Facelift’s unique approach allows for the manipulation of deeper tissues without excessively stretching the skin.
This results in a more natural-looking outcome, avoiding the overtly tightened look that can sometimes occur with a Traditional Facelift.
Deep Plane Facelift is particularly effective in addressing sagging around the cheeks, nasolabial folds (the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and the jawline. It offers a harmonious rejuvenation, blending the improvements seamlessly with your natural facial features.
It’s important to approach it with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of what it can achieve.
Benefits of the Deep Plane Facelift Procedure
Embarking on the journey of a Deep Plane Facelift can be an experience for many. This procedure brings with it a multitude of benefits, each contributing to an enhanced, refreshed appearance. Here are some advantages:
- Natural-Looking Results: One of the most significant benefits of a Deep Plane Facelift is its ability to yield natural-looking results. By addressing the deeper layers of facial structure, this technique avoids the overstretched look that can sometimes result from traditional facelifts.
- Long-Lasting Effects: The changes made during a Deep Plane Facelift are designed to last. By repositioning deeper tissues and muscles, the effects are more enduring compared to superficial treatments.
- Comprehensive Rejuvenation: Deep Plane Facelift addresses multiple signs of ageing in one go. From sagging cheeks and jowls to deep-set wrinkles and loose skin, a Deep Plane Facelift offers a holistic solution to facial ageing.
- Improved Facial Contours: By repositioning the underlying structures of the face, this technique enhances facial contours, resulting in a more youthful and defined appearance, especially around the cheeks and jawline.
- Reduced Scarring: Since the incisions in a Deep Plane Facelift are strategically placed, often along the hairline or natural skin creases, visible scarring is minimised.
- Customisable Approach: Every face is unique, and so are the goals for each Deep Plane Facelift. Anthony can tailor the procedure to address your specific concerns and aesthetic desires.
Who Needs a Deep Plane Facelift?
Deciding to undergo a Deep Plane Facelift is a personal choice, influenced by individual needs, expectations, and health conditions. Here are some considerations to help you determine if this procedure is suitable for you:
- Age and Skin Elasticity: Men and women in their 40s to 60s with moderate to significant facial ageing are good candidates. Good skin elasticity can enhance the results.
- Health Status: Being in good overall health is crucial for any surgical procedure. Conditions that impair healing or increase surgical risks may be a deterrent.
- Expectations: Having realistic expectations about the outcomes is vital. A Deep Plane Facelift can rejuvenate your appearance but won’t fundamentally change your looks.
- Lifestyle Factors: Smokers or those with lifestyle habits that can impede healing might need to reconsider or adjust these habits both before and after the procedure.
- Time for Recovery: Ensure you can allocate sufficient time for recovery, as this process is critical to achieving the best results.
- Financial Consideration: As a significant investment, both in terms of time and money, ensure that a Deep Plane Facelift fits within your budget and life plan.
About the Deep Plane Facelift Surgical Procedure
The Deep Plane Facelift is a complex and intricate procedure that requires the expertise of a skilled plastic surgeon. Understanding the steps involved can help you prepare mentally and physically for what to expect. Here’s a general overview of the process:
- Consultation and Planning: Initially, you’ll have a detailed consultation with Anthony. He will assess your facial structure, discuss your goals, and tailor a plan that suits your specific needs.
- Anaesthesia: Deep plane facelift is performed under general anaesthesia, ensuring you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the surgery.
- Making the Incisions: Anthony makes strategic incisions, often along the hairline and around the ears, to minimise visible scarring. These incisions allow access to the deeper layers of facial tissue
- Repositioning Tissues and Muscles: The core of the procedure involves adjusting the deeper layers of the face.
- Excess Skin Removal: After adjusting the deeper tissues, the skin is gently redraped over the new contours. Any excess skin is trimmed away.
- Closing the Incisions: The incisions are meticulously closed with sutures, ensuring minimal scarring and optimal healing.
- Recovery Begins: Following deep plane facelift, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored as you wake up from anaesthesia.
The duration of the surgery can vary, typically lasting several hours, depending on the extent of the work required. It’s a procedure that demands precision and an artistic touch to ensure results that are both effective and aesthetically pleasing.
Recovery after a Deep Plane Facelift
Recovery is a crucial phase following a Deep Plane Facelift, and understanding what to expect can help in planning and ensuring a smooth healing process. Here’s what happens during recovery:
- Initial Recovery Phase: The first few days post-surgery are critical. You may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain medication and cold compresses can help manage these symptoms.
- Follow-up Appointments: You will have follow-up appointments with Anthony to monitor your healing and remove sutures or drains if they were used.
- Activity Restrictions: It’s important to avoid strenuous activities and direct sun exposure for several weeks. Anthony will provide specific guidelines based on your individual case.
- Healing Process: Swelling and bruising will gradually subside over a few weeks. Most people can return to work and normal activities within 2 to 3 weeks, but full recovery can take several months.
- Long-Term Care: Proper skincare and a healthy lifestyle can help maintain the results of your Facelift. Anthony may advise specific products or routines.
Patience and careful adherence to post-operative instructions are key to achieving the best possible results from your Deep Plane Facelift.

Patient satisfaction is the top priority for Anthony. You can find how patients feel about his work below. The results are almost instantaneous!
I had this procedure in January 2023. I am 63 years old.
I did my research well but was lucky to find the perfect surgeon for me only 30 minutes away. Anthony MacQuillan not only is an experienced plastic surgeon and a nerve specialist but is also a wonderful person to have contact with. He is so kind and considerate, he takes his time explaining everything and at all points during our visits right up to the day itself he said I could change my mind at any time if I wanted to! which I thought was remarkable. He is incredibly honest, and tells you all the worst things that could happen, which is scary but at least you can make an informed choice. And I would’ve got my money back! He has a great team and in particular his anaesthetist Daniel is superb and also put me so at ease. Recovering from a deep plane face and neck lift is not the simple thing that sometimes people make it out to be. Anthony doesn’t use drains. He uses a netting that is sewn under the surface of your skin and when your face swells ,boy, do you know it!
If you work too soon, it will swell up again, even though the netting is removed quite quickly. Even now nearly a year on, I still have some pulling and tightening under my chin, where the nerves are still knitting together -this is not a quick process. However, the results are almost instantaneous! Once you see that swelling going down, you can see the difference he’s made.
It’s also very interesting to know that only 10 people know I had this procedure and of the ones that didn’t even though they’ve been sitting right next to me, had no idea. People just say oh you look great or have you had a good rest.
Admittedly I wasn’t horrendous before, but I didn’t like the fact that my once sharp jawline has deteriorated. I didn’t have any fat transferred into my cheeks, but I did have some under my eyes which worked well and I managed to retain about 80% of it. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Anthony. He is superb so much so that he’s giving me another operation on Saturday. This time on my tummy! I have every faith in him and his techniques
The reason i only have partial pics is because I want to keep this to myself as much as possible:)
I had a deep plane face lift with fat augmentation to lose my facial and deep mandible “ misery” lines. The result has been more than I hoped for and a tremendous boost to my morale. Thank goodness I chose Anthony MacQuillan, who is not only a top class surgeon but also the most lovely and kindest man. I think that most patients are a little apprehensive at the first consultation but Anthony was so easy to talk with and I never felt rushed or unclear about anything.
The operation went smoothly with no pain and the aftercare has been brilliant. ( extra thanks to Michelle who was so supportive and reassuring)
Superb surgeon and amazing result.
After some consideration I recently had an Advanced Mini Face Lift, by Mr MacQuillan, a new service that he is developing, and which I am sure will be a great success. I found him to be very understanding about what I wanted to achieve from the procedure and he explained in great detail how it was performed and what he could achieve from it.
The face lift was performed under local anaesthetic and sedation, and I felt no pain and was completely relaxed the whole time and felt well supported by Mr Sasada, the Consultant Anaesthetist who works with him all the nursing staff in the suite.
I am very pleased with the results, my jaw line and cheeks are greatly improved and my neck looks a lot better. The result is better than I expected and I am total delighted.
The small amount of bruising that I had cleared up very quickly, and the swelling and scars in front of my ears are hardly noticeable, so after the first few days it did not impact on my daily life. – apart from no lifting or bending.
Although not suitable for everybody who wants a face – lift, if this is the procedure that Mr MacQuillan thinks is suitable for you, I would certainly recommend it
I was frightened of doing it but I am so glad I did
I had a deep plane facelift, neck lift and fat taken from my stomach and put into my face to give it volume again. Anthony and his assistant Lucy were amazing and really kept me calm during and after the procedure. Thank you so much, I are delighted with what you have done.
